Woodturning Course
£85.00 – £250.00
On our woodturning courses, you’ll be taught the basics of turning with green (unseasoned) wood, at your own pace by Rich, who has been a woodworker for 30 years. We have three lathes in the workshop so you’ll have your own to use during the session and you’ll also take home everything that you produce.
In our ‘taster session’, you will briefly cover some basic theory and then get straight on the lathes and be guided in having a go at creating 1-2 items.
The ‘full session’ covers more of the theory of woodturning, a detailed description of the tools you’ll be using and then a few hours getting stuck in on the lathes. You will usually start with some spindle-turning and then progress to turning a green wood bowl (or two, if time allows).
As sessions are not mixed groups, it will be just you (and your friend / relative if you’ve booked for two people) and therefore the courses are fairly intensive, covering lots of theory and practice, especially in the full session.

Just had an excellent 1/2 day course with Rich who took me though the basics of wood turning. It was absolutely brilliant and well worth the money. Jane provided the refreshments and some delicious hot cross buns.
This is by far one best hands-on courses I’ve been on. As a complete beginner the sense of achievement is extremely high and satisfying.
If you’re interested in wood turning or know something who might want to try I highly recommend this one.

I had a fantastic half a day with Rich learning some basics of woodturning and coming away with a couple of bowls and a candlestick! It was incredible to start with something that looked like it should be in a fireplace and, under Rich’s relaxed tutelage, seeing it transform into something beautiful and functional.
Rich has a great teaching style that tells you what you need to know but leaves room for you to discover for yourself how to work the chisels to the desired effect. For anyone interested in finding out about this amazing craft or just wanting a new experience I would definitely recommend the Hide Studio.

Fantastic day! I surprised my wife as a birthday treat and we both loved it. Rich and Jane were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The setting is perfect and the skill, knowledge and teaching style from Rich was brilliant. We were both total novices and didn’t know what to expect, but the whole process was seamless and thoroughly enjoyable throughout.
The only problem was that the bowl my wife made is definitely better than mine.
We definitely want to go back and increase our knowledge and will hopefully get a lathe to do some turning as a hobby at some point.

The bowl and candlestick they made are fantastic with beautiful quality wood and the locally made wax to take home was a lovely add on. What a great day, if you’re looking for a guru this is your man. I have set up my work shop and was looking for someone to teach me techniques and to share their wisdom and knowledge.
Richard was brilliant, he was so knowledgable and had lots of skills which he patiently shared and helped me to learn some of. I was not disappointed and came away with knowledge, some gems of tips and tricks, plus bowls and a candle stick I actually made.
It’s seldom you get a teacher who has spent their life working hands on with the subject your looking at. Plus he and his wife are such a lovely human beings, they made the day perfect.

Wow. If you’ve got the budget, go for a full day. They were so welcoming, supportive and genuinely interested in guiding you with the pieces. The expertise, what you come away with, the fun of it, it all makes the price for the course extremely reasonable. It was amazing to know they could fix any mistakes you made whilst still feeling like it was your own piece.
